5 Tips To Conquer Video Interviews

While a video interview may feel more relaxed than a face-to-face interview, don’t be fooled! The same rules apply plus a few more. Here are our 5 tips to help you win your ideal job.

1 – Don’t Be Late

It’s important to “arrive” at least a few minutes early at every job interview. At a video interview, that means checking you have the right software installed as well as an operating microphone and camera.

If the interviewer is working in a different state to you, check on any time zone differences and if there are any, clarify the time prior to the interview.

2 – Dress For Success

What you wear will affect your mindset – even if you aren’t conscious of any changes. Dress how you would for any face-to-face interview (from top to toe). That includes your hair, having clean fingernails, wearing shoes etc. Don’t think you can hide your ripped jeans beneath the desk. Your attitude will give you away.

3 – Set The Scene

Select your interview location carefully. During a video interview, you’ll want to give the impression you’re organised, in control and professional. Therefore, your surroundings need to reflect those qualities.

Don’t opt for free Wi-Fi in a noisy café. The background noise will make it difficult for both you and the interviewer to concentrate and hear each other.

If you choose your home location, ensure you have pets locked away so they won’t make noise or climb across you and your keyboard during the interview. If you have children, make sure they understand they need to be quiet and cannot enter the room or disturb you during the interview.

And look behind you! Are you surrounded by mess or are there mirrors showing disarray in another part of the room? Don’t let your surroundings contradict the professional image you hope to portray.

4 – Body Language

Just like in face-to-face interviews, it’s important to sit up straight and make eye contact with the interviewer. Of course, in a video interview, making eye contact is a bit challenging. Simply look directly at the camera. This will make the interviewer feel you are looking directly at him or her.

5 – Why Choose You?

At the end of the day, all interviews are about finding the right fit for both the applicant and the employer. Prepare for the interview by learning about the organisation. Have a list of questions you want to ask about the role, the organisation’s culture and anything else that matters to you.

You should also consider your response to the questions an interviewer is likely to ask. This will ensure you can explain how you can add value to their current operations along with the skills and experience you bring. If the interviewer will be your future manager, building rapport during the interview is essential.
