Want Productive Staff But Don’t Know How To Find Them? Read On…

Most of us need to work to earn an income but there are many factors that determine what job we choose and why we stay with an organisation. When recruiting new staff, identifying their motivators can really help to identify whether they will be as productive as we hope. The key is to match what they think is important to the requirements of the role.

So How Do You Do This?

One way is to ask each candidate about the things that are important to them. Examples of these types of question are:

– What do you like to do for fun?

– What sort of work gets you excited?

– How do you know when you’ve had a good day?

– How do you see your life in 5 years?

– What does success look like for you?

The reason for asking these types of questions is to identify what’s most important to each candidate and then checking if the role will fit with their greater life goals and priorities.

How Does It Work?

Example 1: A candidate who places great importance on being present for their children’s milestones will greatly value flexible work hours. If the role can’t accommodate that type of flexibility, you won’t be able to keep the employee and you will never gain their full engagement. However, if you give them the flexibility to determine their own hours within the bounds of clear performance objectives, you will have a highly dedicated, loyal and productive employee.

Example 2: A highly ambitious candidate might require an extremely challenging work environment that gives them the scope to learn new skills and rapidly acquire greater responsibility. If your organisation can’t fulfil those needs, you will quickly uncover a dissatisfied, complacent and unproductive worker who is planning their next move.

Match Values With Job Descriptions

Employers and/or interviewers need to identify and explain how the duties of the job description match the candidate’s values. They also need to acknowledge that no matter how good a candidate might look from their CV, there will never be a happy outcome if the role doesn’t match the employer’s priorities.

We all need our values and priorities to be supported by our actions. This is particularly relevant at work because it consumes so much of our daily lives.

That’s why money alone will never attract and keep highly productive personnel.
