Mobile technology and work portability have led to Australians working longer hours than their OECD counterparts. A consequence of this ‘constantly on’ environment, is a blurring of lines in terms of what’s an acceptable online commentary about work issues.
Around 11% of Australian employees have posted critical comments about their workplace or colleagues. Perhaps surprisingly, a study of 2000 Australian and British workers found managers and supervisors were slightly more likely than other employees to post these criticisms online.
Yet 68% of Australian employees believe employers have a right to protect their business interests by disciplining employees who are critical of them on social media.
Are You Protected From Critical Posts From Employees?
Without up-to-date policies on social media use, you may find you are unable to request a critical post be removed. If the criticism is directed at another member of the team, you have an even bigger problem on your hands.
Do you have policies on social media use in your workplace? If you do, when was the last time you reminded staff of this policy’s existence and their obligations under it?
Depending on your answer, it may be time to chat with us.
