We’re More Similar Than You Think – Cross Generational Management Styles

There are now five different generations making up the Australian workforce and the popular myth is they each share different values. However, Australian research says otherwise.

In fact, the research consistently shows that employees under 55 share the same top 3 priorities which are:

1. Exciting and challenging work
2. Opportunities to advance
3. Autonomy and freedom

The only difference between under and over 55s is the desire for career advancement. Instead, over 55s value meaningful work.

So How Do You Manage A Multi-Generational Workforce?

The research found that Australians are much the same – regardless of their age – so the best leaders use management styles that suit the individual as well as the task at hand.

Six different management styles have been identified. They are:

1. Directive – This is an autocratic style that works well in emergencies or when people don’t know what to do

2. Participative – Use this style of leadership when you have a competent team and are looking for ways to create innovation within the workplace or your industry

3. Visionary – This is big picture stuff where employees are given a vision for where the organisation is heading and how they can contribute to getting there

4. Coaching – A more individual-focused management style, coaching involves providing support and mentoring to fully develop an individual’s skill set while providing a safe environment for learning

5. Affiliative – This is a management technique that builds teams who are tolerant of each other’s differences, collaborate well and resolve conflict

6. Pace-Setting (or leading by example) – A great short-term management technique to increase performance
